The winner

This is the snowman that won the college's snow sculpture contest. Impressive, no?

PS

Snowman builders, originally uploaded by Kait W..

So yeah, that post where I got all ranty about the snow? I might've exaggerated just a bit. That day, a bunch of us went out in the snow and made this fine-looking snowman that you see here. Yes, it took eight graduate students, several of them engineers, to produce this. We are awesome.

We did not win the college's snowman-making contest. The winner was a very impressive snowman sitting on a toilet.

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day linda gente. Hope you have a fantastic day. I actually like Valentine's Day, but I have to work tonight, so it won't be as fun as always.

In past years I've watched cheesy chick flicks and had dinner with friends who were single/in long distance relationships, but the undergrads are having an entz (party) tonight, so I'll spend my evening with the other Junior Deans breaking up stuff and putting people to bed.

In the meantime, back to work, and I'll probably hit the town for a bit before this all begins. Laterz!

Bonita la gente que estuvo y no está

A very close family friend passed away this weekend. You know the type of friend: the kind you call family even if the person is not related to you. She had cancer for the third time in seventeen years.

It's never easy, not when someone goes suddenly and not when someone is sick for a long time. Even though she was sick for a long time, it was still too soon. She was only about a year older than my mother.

She was the kind of person who was always there, who did nothing but give. The world needs more people like that.

I can't think of anything else to say right now. Requiscat in Pace, Donna.

I still don't care

So I opened my windows this morning to find that Oxford has had its annual snowfall. It looks like less than an inch, but needless to say, the Brits (and anyone who comes from a country where it doesn't snow) are falling over themselves with delight.

When you come from a place where it snows pretty much all winter and pretty much every year, snow is not exciting or magical. It is a pain in the @$$. I have no desire to go "play" in it - I just want it to go away.

Here is my post on the topic from two years ago. The sentiment is still sincere.

Nah, I'm not grumpy. I'm actually in a good mood, as my hacking issue seems to be resolved (as most of you might have read about from my email) and I'm going to London tomorrow (weather permitting).

Off to go take on the day. Laterz!
